It looked like a hotel when I found it on booking.com… it’s called a hotel… it’s not a hotel. It’s a converted apartment in an apartment block. Nothing really wrong with that but it’s very small. The apartment “hallway” is the reception area. One room is their office / laundry room and the other three rooms have been converted to bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. There is no restaurant in the “hotel”, but they have a deal with the restaurant / cafe immediately opposite - a 10 second walk. Someone told me the hotel and restaurant are owned by the same people. Service was good and the inclusive breakfast was very nice. The furniture in the bedroom all appeared to be new but authentic looking and was very nice, if you like that style. The mattress was very comfortable. The balcony was a good size. I felt the room was a bit small for the money for Gyumri, probably about 130 sq. ft.

I was in bedroom 2 and there was a problem with the drains. The bathroom stank!!! I had arrived late in the evening and tried to ask the night staff member (a gentleman who didn’t speak a word of English) if he had an air freshener spray. Clearly my desperate hand gestures were not enough. He turned on the extractor fan which made next to no difference. The next morning I asked the female staff member who was a little more receptive and did speak some basic English. She explained that that smell was from the drains and… her solution was to offer me to move to a different room! Not to stick some chemicals down the drain! The biggest annoyance was that at 2:30 am when I was fast asleep, Mr. No English’s phone rang at full volume. He answered it after about 10 seconds, by which time I was wide awake. Then instead of speaking in hushed tones, he spoke at normal volume. Keep in mind this is a converted apartment, so he’s only about 25ft from my door and as is traditional here, the floors are tiled, not carpeted, so it was pretty thoughtless! I waited 30 seconds and with no change in the volume of his nighttime chat, got up, opened my door and SHUSHED him as forcefully as I could. He got the message! Between the small and the noise, I’d had enough. My work colleagues told me there was a new PROPER hotel around the corner - The Apricot Hotel - I went to have a look and it was about $10 more per night approx., so I moved hotel and am delighted with the Apricot.
